The Heroin Epidemic – Understanding Substance Addiction in Butler County & How It Affects Children

Supplies needed: Soap, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, hairspray (non-aerosol), shave gel (non-aerosol), pens, journals, children’s books, coloring books, crayons, and markers. Supplies provide “Baskets of Hope” for new rehab residents and their children in Hamilton, OH.

Understanding Trauma – How the Syrian Crisis Affects Children

(Dr. Khaula Sawah, CEO, Union of Medical Care & Relief Organizations- UOSSM)

Supplies needed: New or clean, gently used clothes, shoes, winter gear, and blankets (underwear must be new); towels and washcloths (new); diapers; small non-battery toys and stuffed animals; and crayons, pencils/pens, paper/notebooks. Supplies will be shipped directly by SAF/UOSSM to displaced persons in Syria.

Penny Challenge: Support your favorite charity (Sojourner Recovery Services or Syrian American Foundation) throughout the month of February by bringing your pocket change to the Information Desk in Johnston Hall. The winning charity will be given an additional $200 by Miami!

Supply Drive: Each grocery-bag sized donation gets you a lollipop and an entry into a drawing for a FREE IPAD (valued at $400)! We will be doing concentrated drives, sorting, and donation delivery on Friday, February 12th  and Friday, February 26th from 10 AM – 6 PM in Johnston Hall, East (Bookstore) Entrance. Donations for both charities will also be collected ongoing throughout the month of February. Bring your donations to the Information Desk in Johnston Hall at any time during business hours. Our goal is 100 boxes of supplies for Syria and 25 boxes of supplies for Sojourner Recovery Services.  Opportunities to sign up as a volunteer to assist with the supply drive will be provided by The Office of Community Engagement & Service (CES).  Please contact Crystal Ford for more details at (513) 727-3339 or fordcm2@miamioh.edu.
